Storytelling

Recently I heard the actor, author, talk show host and professional storyteller Graham Norton give a basic guide on how to tell a story well. "It's an art form as old as time," he said. He's right. We've been telling stories since the Pleistocene era.

Today we also use stories to make business presentations, pitches and meetings more effective and memorable.

As Graham says, a well told story must be:

  1. simple in structure
  2. relevant and real
  3. delivered slowly, with pauses, to be easily heard and understood.

It’s great to hear a professional like Graham Norton endorse the basics of effective storytelling – try these tips next time you’re telling a strategic story for business or just a personal tale for your friends.
